Somali forces eliminate 130 Al-Shabaab fighters in military offensives
No fewer than 130 al-Shabaab militants were killed in simultaneous military operations in central and southern Somalia, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday.
The defense ministry also announced that its forces liberated a large expanse of land and weapons from the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group in the past three days.
For the past three days, the army has been fighting the terror groups in the central province of Mudug in Hirshabelle state and in Jubaland.
“Large swaths of territory were liberated” during these operations, which the ministry called against the “Khawarijs,” the new adopted name to describe the Al Shabaab fighters.
In the operations, “large swaths of territory were liberated” from the “Khawarijs,”“Caadley, Buurta Yagoos, and the vicinity of Baraag Ismaaciil, all located in Mudug region” are liberated from the terrorist group, the ministry said.
“The Somali National Army and the People’s Defense Forces are determined to continue the war against the Khawarij until they are eradicated from the country,” the statement explained
Backed by local forces, the Somali army has been fighting terror groups operating in the country.
The government of the country vowed to decimate the strength of the groups and work towards sustainable peace in the country.
