Protests rock Tel Aviv as IDF troops kill Israeli citizens held hostage in Gaza
Fresh protests rocked the streets of Tel Aviv as citizens rallied against the IDF for the mistaken killing of Israeli hostages in Gaza by the military.
The apparently enraged demonstrators urged the Israeli government to negotiate over the release of the remaining Israelis being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
One of their banners read, ‘Every day a hostage dies’.
Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka, and Alon Shamriz were mistakenly fired by troops as they were misidentified as a “threat”, during the IDF’s raging ground offensive in northern Gaza.
The IDF has expressed “deep remorse” over the killings and has said it will launch an investigation.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also described their killings as, “an unbearable tragedy”
On its part, the House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby called the accidental killing of three hostages in Gaza by Israeli forces a “tragic mistake”.
“We don’t have perfect visibility on exactly how this operation unfolded and how this tragic mistake was made,” Kirby said.
Until now, 110 hostages have gained freedom from Gaza – in a series of negotiations brokered by Qatar, and Egypt, with additional contributions by the CIA.
Meanwhile, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 18,800 people have now been confirmed killed since Israel launched its retaliatory campaign after the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel.
According to official figures, the Israeli death toll in the Hamas attack stands at 1,200, while several others remain in captivity.
