US President says Israel losing global support over Gaza bombing as more civilians confirmed dead
U.S. President Joe Biden said the “indiscriminate” bombing of civilians was costing Israel international support and growing diplomatic isolation in its war in Gaza.
This is the hardest condemnation of Israel’s leadership in recent times by the White House.
His comments were made to donours at a fundraising event on Tuesday.
“Israel’s security can rest on the United States, but right now it has more than the United States. It has the European Union, it has Europe, it has most of the world,” he told donors to his 2024 re-election campaign in Washington.
“But they’re starting to lose that support by indiscriminate bombing that takes place,” he said.
The war in Gaza has put the United States, Israel’s main ally, under pressure, with President Joe Biden facing criticism, including from within his own Democratic Party, to prevail on Israel’s military campaign that has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians.
Recall that the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a heavily supported draft, demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza as fighting rages between Israel and Hamas.
The resolution, although non-binding, was presented by Egypt with the support of nearly 100 countries and passed with 153 votes in favour as the 193-member General Assembly gathered for an emergency special session on the ongoing war.
The vast majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have already been made homeless as Israeli warplanes bombed the enclave.
The health ministry in Gaza said Israeli bombardments have killed more than 18,400 people since October 7, when Hamas broke through Israel’s heavily guarded perimeter and killed 1,200 people and abducted more than 200 people.
