ActionAid says Children ‘will suffer the most’ as situations in Gaza degenerate
The charity ActionAid has declared that children are severely affected by the situation in Gaza, as thousands of people are forced to live in improvised shelters or sleep rough.
Riham Jafari, from the charity, says “those who were already hungry, thirsty, exhausted and terrified are now wet and cold too”.
“As conditions become ever harsher, it is children who will suffer the most.”
Earlier, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, said the ability of his agency to come to the aid of the people of Gaza is on the “verge of collapse”.
He added that more than 130 staff from the agency have died since the war began in the besieged enclave.
On X, Lazzarini said, “saw videos of an @UNRWA school in northern #Gaza blown up. It is outrageous. All public facilities, including hospitals & @UN schools are protected under international law. Parties to this brutal war have the coordinates of all our facilities in Gaza.”
While reacting to the post, the EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said, “Hospitals, schools, UN facilities must be protected by all, at all times. Respect for IHL is an obligation. I pay tribute to @UNRWA and Lazzarini’s work. They do their utmost to help 1.9 M people survive in Gaza and lost 170 staffers under the bombings. They must be supported.”
The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza had also warned its supply of vaccines for children has run out, as UN agencies warn of a public health disaster.
