Pitch invasion: Egypt national team coach allays fears of Liverpool fans over Mo Salah’s safety
Egypt manager Mohamed Ghoraba has insisted there is nothing for Liverpool fans to worry about regarding Mohamed Salah’s safety after pitch invaders targeted the forward.
Social media footage showed security racing onto the field of play during Egypt’s 2-0 in over Sierra Leon as pitch invaders jumped the barriers and appeared to head towards Salah, with his team-mates also gathering around him
He was then escorted off the field of play at full time by a number of military guards, as another fan tried their bet to snap a picture with Salah, approaching the group.
The events have left some Liverpool fans concerned over the safety of their star man while he is away with Egypt, with the 31-year-old being the star of African football and idolised by many.
But, speaking to The Athletic, Ghoraba claimed there was no risk of assault and that the fans had good intentions as they approached the forward.
‘For them, Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Elneny are icons, so their presence in the country is something they wish to happen again. For them, that’s the only opportunity to have Salah playing in their ground, so it’s normal like any fan entering the pitch.’
Salah secured an assist as former Aston Villa man Trezeguet scored twice for the African side in Liberia as Egypt continued their perfect start to qualifying for the World Cup in 2025.
The game ended in sour fashion as the home side ended the game with nine men, with Abdul Jarju Kabia and Derby County star Tyrese Fornah both being given their marching orders in the match.
One video showed a number of individuals sprinting towards Salah as a number of unauthorised people appeared to target him.
Salah’s team-mate Mohamed Abdelmonem can be seen guarding his team-mate, with one invader changing his focus from Salah to running back for the stands, chased by officials.
A number of people – including security guards draped in hi-vis jackets – were on the field as the clip ended, but Salah appeared calm as he tried to evade the situation.
Another clip showed a shirtless Salah being escorted off the field by a number of military guards, with one member of the public still trying their best to grab a photo with the forward.
